Groups resulting from the draw
The formation of the European Football Championship groups is carried out through a draw, following a structured process based on certain criteria established by UEFA. Here I explain the general procedure:
1. Classification and Participation
- First, national teams must qualify for the tournament through the UEFA qualifying rounds.
- In the final phase, 24 national teams usually participate.
2. Draw Hype
- Qualified teams are divided into four pots (Pots), based on their position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking or their performance in recent qualifying tournaments.
- Pot 1 contains the highest-ranked teams, Pot 2 the next best group, and so on until Pot 4.
3. Distribution in Groups
- The draw is carried out to distribute the teams into the different groups (generally from A to F), each with 4 teams.
- During the draw, balls are drawn from each pot to assign teams to groups.
- An established order is followed to ensure a balanced distribution.
4. Rules and Restrictions
- Certain rules and restrictions apply to prevent teams from the same federation from facing each other in the group stage.
- There may also be restrictions based on geopolitical or logistical criteria.
5. Hosts and Location
- If there are host countries, their teams may have predetermined places in the groups to ensure they play in their country.
- This process takes place in a public ceremony, broadcast globally, and supervised by UEFA representatives to ensure transparency and fairness.

Regulations in the Euro Cup
The Euro Cup regulations, regulated by UEFA, cover a wide range of aspects of the tournament, from the qualifying phase to the final tournament. Here I summarize some key points of the Euro Cup regulations:
Qualification Phase
1. League System:
- The teams are divided into groups by draw, and play home and away matches.
- The best teams in each group qualify for the final phase.
2. Play-offs:
Teams that do not qualify directly through the group stage can be given a second chance through the play-offs, based on their performance in the UEFA Nations League.
Final phase
1. Tournament Format
- 24 teams participate, divided into 6 groups of 4 teams each.
- Each team plays against the other three teams in its group.
2. Group Classification
The two best teams in each group, along with the four best third places, advance to the knockout phase (round of 16).
Group Stage Tie Breaking Criteria
- Points obtained in all group matches.
- Direct confrontations between tied teams.
- Goal difference in direct confrontations.
- Goals scored in direct confrontations.
- If there is still a tie, criteria such as goal difference in all group matches, goals scored in all group matches, and if necessary, fair play ranking are applied.
Direct Elimination Phase
1. Format
- Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and the final.
- Direct elimination matches, where the winning team advances and the loser is eliminated.
2. Extra Time and Penalties
- In the event of a tie after regulation time, a 30-minute extra time is played (two 15-minute halves).
- If the tie persists, the winner is decided by a penalty shootout.
General rules
1. Number of Players
- Each team can enter a roster of 23 players, including three goalkeepers.
- Substitutions: Five substitutions are allowed per match, with a sixth allowed in extra time.
2. Fair Play and Sanctions
- Accumulated yellow cards can lead to suspensions.
- UEFA promotes fair play and may impose sanctions for unsportsmanlike conduct, racism, and other violations.
These regulations are designed to ensure a fair, competitive and well-organized tournament. UEFA publishes detailed official regulations before each tournament, which is accessible to teams and the public.
