Groups resulting from the draw
Below you can see which teams make up each of the competition groups as a result of the draw carried out.
The composition of the groups in the Olympic Games football tournament follows a specific process to ensure a balanced and competitive draw. Here I explain how these groups are formed:
1. Equipment Classification
National teams participating in the Olympic tournament qualify through continental tournaments organized by their respective confederations (e.g. UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, AFC, CAF and OFC). Each confederation has a certain number of places allocated for the Olympic Games.
2. Number of Teams and Groups
- Men's Tournament: Generally 16 teams participate, which are divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each.
- Women's Tournament: Generally 12 teams participate, which are divided into 3 groups of 4 teams each.
3. Seedings and Draw
To balance the competition, seeds are designated based on previous performances in international tournaments and other criteria established by FIFA. The teams are placed in different pots according to their ranking and/or region.
4. Drawing Procedure
- Pots: The teams are placed in different pots. For example, in the case of the men's tournament, there could be 4 pots with 4 teams each.
- Regional Distribution: An attempt is made to avoid teams from the same confederation being in the same group (although this is not always possible due to the number of participating teams from each region).
- Assignment to Groups: Teams are drawn from each pot and assigned to groups sequentially until all teams are distributed.
5. Final Composition
Each group will have a mix of teams from different regions and levels of competition, ensuring diversity and equity in the group stage. The matches in each group are played in a league format, where each team faces the other three teams in the same group.

Regulations for football in the Olympic games
Football in the Olympic Games follows the regulations established by FIFA, with some particularities due to the nature of the tournament and the participation of national teams with certain restrictions. Here is a summary of the main regulations:
1. Team Participation
- Men's Tournament: It is limited to players under 23 years of age, although each team can call up to three players over 23 years of age (known as "over-age" players).
- Women's Tournament: It has no age restrictions, so teams can be made up of players of any age.
2. Classification
- Men's Teams: They qualify through regional and continental tournaments organized by the respective confederations (e.g. UEFA in Europe, CONMEBOL in South America).
- Women's Teams: They also qualify through continental tournaments and other qualifying tournaments organized by FIFA and the confederations.
3. Tournament Format
- Both tournaments (men's and women's) follow a similar format:
- Group Stage: Teams are divided into groups and play in a round-robin format within the group.
- Knockout Phase: The best teams in each group advance to the knockout rounds, which include quarterfinals, semifinals and the final.
4. Rules of the Game
- The rules of the game follow the "Laws of the Game" established by FIFA, including aspects such as the duration of the match (90 minutes divided into two halves of 45 minutes), the possibility of extra time and penalties in case of a tie in the knockout phase, the number of substitutions allowed, etc.
5. Teams and Players
- Call: Each team can register 18 players for the tournament (including two goalkeepers).
- Uniforms: Teams must wear uniforms that comply with FIFA and International Olympic Committee (IOC) regulations.
6. Discipline
- The disciplinary rules (yellow and red cards, sanctions for accumulation of cards, etc.) are the same as those established by FIFA for other international tournaments.
These regulations ensure that the tournament remains competitive and aligned with international football standards, while providing unique opportunities for young players (in the case of the men's tournament) and for the promotion of women's football globally.
